Why study Finnish?

About 87% of Finns speak Finnish as their mother tongue. About 5% of Finns speak Swedish as their mother tongue.

If you want to apply for Finnish citizenship, you must be at least fluent in Finnish, Swedish or Finnish or Finnish-Swedish sign language. When applying for citizenship, you will need to attach proof of language proficiency. For more information on language skill requirements, see the official language proficiency certificate on the InfoFinland page.

For most jobs you need to know Finnish. If you want to study in Finland, you may need Finnish language skills.

Even if you don't plan to stay in Finland for a long time, learning Finnish is worthwhile. Although Finns generally speak English very well, it will be very useful for you to know Finnish.

When you can speak Finnish it will be easier for you to adapt and you will feel more at ease in Finland. It will be easier to deal with affairs, keep abreast of the news, meet people and make friends.

The best way to learn a language is to speak it at every opportunity. You don't always have to understand every word, it's enough to understand the most important things. So be bold and get into an environment where you can speak Finnish.
